Over My Shoulder

Over My Shoulder

It's dark and cold.
The wind is blowing hard against my face as
I struggle to  move forward.
But over my shoulder
I hear many footsteps.
These are all the people who stood behind me
No matter what
So I go forward.

The wind blows harder
And the cold is now making my eyes tear up.
I want to just give up.
But over my shoulder
Are the voices, so strong,
Of the people who encouraged me to persevere
Despite the odds
So I go forward.

The gusts are now so strong
It feels like hands pushing me to my knees
As the cold cuts my skin.
But over my shoulder
I look back and see the faces
Of all those who inspired me, helped me, consoled me
When I felt alone.
So I go forward.

Now I stand up straight
And I curse the wind and cold and defy them
As I walk without pause.
And over my shoulder
I sense the love and faith
That so many have given me and continue to give me.
And I go forward.
